It’s that time of the year again, when sipping cider in the afternoon becomes socially acceptable. Yes, what a beautiful thing - it’s festival season again and Camden Crawl followed by The Great Escape made for a perfect beginning to this year’s music overdosing activities.
Niki and The Dove played an intimate day time show at Camden Crawl which you can see piccys of here. They were busting full of their fun charm and sounded stripped back and perfect, their drums always get me. They included the track Last Night which happens to be one of my favourites. Other highlights were Stealing Sheep, We Were Evergreen and Fear of Men.
On to The Great Escape in the beautiful town of Brighton. And what an escape it was, I got there early just to revel on the beach. And for the record - salty sea air smells WAY better than salty kebab of Bethnal Green smell. It was a welcome change. The Great Escape is overwhelmingly good. Packed FULL of every new band you can think of and more, it’s the most exciting festival I’ve ever been to in terms of music. (Obviously the enchanted wood at Latitude wins on pure feral excitement factor) But for new music lovers, The Great Escape is like a giant sweet shop. There is music everywhere, on streets, busting out of cafe’s, on the beach, in the grubbiest dives known to Brighton. You really have to plan what to see and our schedule went something like this…
1) Walk along the beach for fresh air and to erase London fumes in lungs
2) Watch Savoir Adore at Life
3) Interview Savoir Adore on the beach (You can hear that on this week’s Filthy Disco)
4) Watch Swim Deep in Beyond Retro
5) Dress up in amazing old clothes in Beyond Retro
6) To the beach for a big load of fish and chips and beer
7) Tease seagulls on the beach and watch go horribly wrong as entire Brighton population of gulls descend on our lunch
8) Run to the Amazing Radio camp and watch Eagulls
9) Get lost in back streets and be in general awe of how amazing Brighton is. We want to move here.
10) Set up camp at Blind Tiger so we can save standing room for Alt J’s show
11) Watch French Films (who were incredible) then Weird Dreams and then Alt J who blew everyone away with their ridiculously tight and enchanting set.
12) Run for our train screaming into the wind how amazing Alt J are and how we can’t believe it and want to marry them all. They should win a medal for that performance or at least me knighted by the Queen (that type of thing)
13) Almost miss train whilst choosing sandwich in M&S. I chose chicken and Chorizo, was worth it
14) Catch train and dream of sea air and Alt J all the way home.
This is the new video directed by Rivkah Gevinson for Stealing Sheep’s uplifting and magically enchanting song Shut Eye. In true Stealing Sheep fashion the song is full of twinkling harmonies and pounding drums.
I love those girls.

NEWS // The XX will play intimate shows in May

This is absolute blasphemy to admit but I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE XX LIVE. It’s atrocious I know, but hey guess what?? They’ve just announced they’ll be playing three little shows in London in THIS MONTH. To get in with a chance of purchasing tickets (which will be £19.50 each) you have to enter the ticket lottery HERE
They wowed everyone (apart from me because I was not there) with their dark and bassy shows a few years back when they emerged so it’s damn sure to be spesh.
THIS IS TOO EXCITING, go go go enter. Don’t tell me I never tell you anything for free.

LISTEN // FEMME - sirens
This has got a beautiful vibe. Makes me think of long rum-drenched summer beach days, it’s like a big hot day dream. Laura made it on her recent trip to LA, seems like the good weather made an impression on her.
